Abstract : A calibration procedure for field strength meters in the 1 GHz to 10 GHz frequency range is described. The procedure includes calibration of the receiver attenuators, overall receiver linearity, and calibration of the receiver as a two terminal voltmeter. A procedure for the determination of antenna factors is described. Radio frequency fields at VHF-UHF are often made up of several multipath components. These component signals, which have different amplitudes, phases and directions of arrival combine to produce a standing wave pattern. Field strength measurements of such fields made with conventional methods do not furnish sufficient information for prediction purposes. Analysis is facilitated by resolving the field into the components of which it is composed. Methods for the analysis of such fields are described. Results comparable to those attainable by the use of a large aperture direction antenna are achieved through the use of two small aperture antennas which are used for a sequence of measurements. The series of measurements are then processed through an electronic computer to provide the desired information. Both linear and circular sampling of the simulated aperture are discussed. Analysis of multipath fields directly through the use of pencil beam antennas is also discussed. (Author)
