Abstract : The intimate connection between an induced absorption transition and a spontaneous emission transition for two levels of rare-earth ion embedded in a crystalline solid is explored experimentally. It is verified experimentally that the fluorescence branching ratios for a given metastable level can be calculated by the use of three parameters characterizing the system. The previously determined parameter sets for a number of rare earth ions doped into Y2O3 and LaF3 single crystals are used to calculate the fluorescence branching ratios of a number of metastable levels. Fluorescence lifetime data are used to predict the radiative quantum efficiencies for these levels. (Author)
