Abstract : The purpose of this effort is to conduct a C-band phased array crossed-field amplifier program. The tube is a broad band, high peak and average power output, C-band amplifier, which is to be dc operated, with control electrode turn off. In addition, the amplifier is to be packaged with a 9 inch diameter magnetically shielded permanent magnet package. A new structure, the helix coupled vane (HCV) circuit, has demonstrated bandwidth in excess of the present 10% requirements. One of the important aspects of the program will be the examination of several variations of this circuit to arrive at an optimum design in terms of bandwidth, gain, efficiency and power capability. Two versions of the helix coupled vane circuit (Type A and Type B) have been studied in cold test. The dispersion curves agree closely with the calculated values. Relative interaction impedance measurements have been made and the results show the Type B circuit has a higher interaction impedance. Matching studies on the circular models of both versions have been started and the Type A matching is nearly complete. A cathode material study program has been initiated, in which several materials will be examined for their suitability for use in the dc operated amplifier.
