Abstract : Carbon dioxide absorption and desorption from an airstream with 300 ppm CO2 was evaluated in a closed air loop apparatus, and the CO2 absorption curves were recorded as ppm CO2 versus time in minutes. Low concentrations of KOH, monoethanolamine (MEA) and 3-aminopropanol in solution revealed enhanced rates of CO2 absorption and desorption upon the addition of carbonic anhydrase. Ethylamine and propylamine were evaluated in the same manner as comparative compounds for the effect of the hydroxyl group. NaOH, KOH, KC1, K2CO3, and tri-(hydroxmethyl) amionomethane (Tris) were evaluated as comparative standards. MEA, 3-aminopropanol and Tris solutions used for many successive evaluations revealed good CO2 absorption and desorption properties which remained effective over relatively long experimental time periods. The absorption curves obtained in a closed air loop apparatus revealed relative rates of CO2 absorption. Comparisons of the CO2 concentration on the curve at the 21 minute time period provided a rating of the capacity of that absorbing solution. Desorptions of CO2 with nitrogen aeration was enhanced by carbonic anhydrase with the MEA and 3-aminopropanol, thus indicating the possible use of enzymic amine solutions for the control of CO2 absorption and desorption in atmosphere control concepts.
