Abstract : During the last week in July and the first week in August 1951, a reconnaissance survey of the bottom sediments and topography of Boston Harbor and vicinity was made on the R/V HAZEL III (Cruises 3 and 4). The area within the 25-fathom contour lying west of 70 deg 49 min W. Longitude was covered during the survey. The bottom samples were taken with an underway sampler made by removing the sampling head from a 'scoopfish' and remounting this head on a dummy bathythermograph. Holes were bored through the outside case and the sample container so as to coincide when the latter was in the open position, to allow better penetration of the sampler on striking the bottom. Without an escape opening, the water in the sample container acted as a cushion to prevent entrance of the bottom sediment. After a few days use, it was found advisable to add diagonal braces from the cover hinges to the case to prevent bending of the case of striking a hard bottom. The 'soundfish' was used on the first day of the survey. It gave an excellent continuous record of the bottom sediments. In order to keep the instrument on the bottom, the speed of towing was limited to 2 knots. The 'soundfish' was lost on the first day when it apparently lodged behind a boulder and the towing cable parted. The survey was continued with the underway sampler alone. Another 'soundfish' is being constructed which is designed to be towed at a greater speed with a heavier cable.
