Abstract : The hard-kernel-bunch analysis of beam-wave interaction was carried out assuming either a single-bunch or a two-bunch model of the space charge in the beam. In both cases simple expressions were obtained for the r-f wave amplitude and the trajectories of the bunches. The abbreviated Kino gun was relocated in the S-band amplifier with the result that a maximum electronic gain of 31 db was achieved at 3.1 GHz and at the design values of magnetic field and electrode voltages. However, spurious oscillations were still present and these were shown to be due to transverse resonance phenomena associated with the drift-region geometry. A poor vacuum precluded the possibility of additional crossed-field noise analyzer investigations. A redesigned aperture system was inserted into the beam analyzer but the system was damaged during the outgassing process. The emitting-sole amplifier was investigated with secondary emission and space-charge effects included. It was observed that the continuous emitting-sole model gave greater gain than the multiple cathode system. Also, operation above cutoff was observed to produce greater gain than could be obtained from operation below cutoff. (Author)
