Abstract : The present study was initiated to investigate the fusion process of low melting salts, and specifically of tetra-n-amyl ammonium thiocyanate. This salt falls into a class of compounds for which the cations and anions are both polyatomic and which have closely similar energies of activation for the processes of electrical conductance and viscous flow in the molten state. Careful cryoscopic measurements established the freezing point of the salt at 50.3 C and uncovered a solid state transition between 36 and 42 C. The total entropy change for the process of fusion is 28.7 cal./deg. mole. The interpretation of these data, and the viscosity and electrical conductance of this salt in the molten state are discussed.
