Abstract : The investigations reported are concerned with the Application of logicnetworks, pattern recognition concepts and functionapproximation methods to control problems. These techniques are used in approximating an implicitly defined adaptive control law by a fixed function of measurements of the plant motion. The implicit control law is determined offline for a set of sample points which are representative of possible measurements made on the plant and a function is determined which satisfactorily maps the sample points into the desired control. The function obtained is then used as the closedloop control law. Section II of this report reviews the way in which logicnetworks may be used to mechanize controllers. Section III shows how an adaptive control problem yields an implicitly defined control function. Section IV applies the concept of a fixedfunction approximation of an implicit control law to design of a timeoptimal pitchrate controller for the F101 aircraft. (Author)
