Abstract : Phase I: Doping cobalt oxide with altervalent cationic impurities and with selected fluoride impurities on its oxidation and decomposition was investigated. The rate-controlling step of these reactions is related to the transfer of electrons between the surface oxygen and the solid oxide and that the rate of reaction can be controlled by changing the electronic defect structure of the solid oxide. The chemical reactivity of palladium was markedly altered in the presence of fluorides. Phase II: Doping with impurities and preexposure to high-energy radiation on the ignition of boron powder in oxygen were investigated. The ignition temperature of boron was reduced by as much as 150 C by doping with fluoride and silicofluoride impurities. The effects of the JP-4 hydrocarbon slurry medium on the ignition of the boron fuels were also investigated. Exposure to gamma rays had little effect on the ignition of the boron. At pressures of oxygen below 180 mm Hg the oxidation of boron is essentially independent of oxygen pressure and obeys a parabolic rate law.
