Abstract : The response of reactor instrumentation and an analysis of the power spectral density of noise generated by in-core void formations that simulate nucleate and partial-film boiling were studied in the NARF Reactivity Test Assembly (RTA) and the Ground Test Reactor (GTR). With the GTR core configuration in the RTA, voids were generated by bubbling air through selected element positions. Data obtained in the RTA tests were used to induce actual boiling in a single, specially instrumented element of the GTR. Testing thus performed provided power spectral density data on boiling, nonboiling, and simulated boiling at various power levels; thermal and coolant-flow data in the special element; and effects of boiling on reactivity and normal reactor instrumentation.
