Abstract : The preparation and microwave measurements of two new pyrographite-like materials is described. One is a composite of PG and BN (2%); the other is a boron-doped PG periodically modulated with a few percent peak of BN. The use of the silver dot technique was still found necessary in order to overcome the contact problem. This permits fairly good agreement of most measured data for the rectangular waveguide case with a theory described in this report. The results with pyrographite-like materials still indicate a possible use for these materials as microwave attenuators in tubes. The successful experiment with a periodically modulated material (BPG-BN) supports the belief that a periodically modulated material of BN and either W or ZrB2 can be fabricated. If this is true, then a low-loss anisotropic material will be the result. Two such composite layered materials are planned for preparation in the next quarter, one to be made by synthetic techniques and the other by true codeposition techniques. (Author)
