Abstract : Results of a study program are presented on the use of passive neutron and gamma detectors (foils and dosimeters) in radiation-effects fields at extreme nonnuclear environments. Information is given on the preparation and use of high-temperature-resistant detectors: (1) calcium sulfate pellets for fast-neutron detection and (2) calcium phosphate pellets and cadmium oxide shields for thermal-neutron detection. The advantages of using resonance neutron detectors in association with fast-neutron detectors to identify variations in neutron spectral energy are demonstrated by the presentation of relative activation data for 14 reactions in nine typical radiation-effects environments. Counting-efficiency procedures and results for resonance neutron detectors are given for proportional beta-counting of activated foils. Favorable results of integrated-fast-flux measurements using nickel, sulfur, and aluminum detectors are given by comparing similar data. Some of the limitations of the gamma detectors - cobalt glass, tetrachloroethylene, and nitrous oxide - are noted, along with emphasis on the need for parametric investigations, e.g., temperature dependence.
