Abstract : It is shown that exothermic blunt body flows in H2O2 or H2air mixtures can be characterized by the parameter K = u sub infinity T/R sub b, where u sub infinity is the free stream velocity, T is the ignition delay time and R sub b is the body radius of curvature at the stagnation point. An approximation scaling law relating K to R sub b and p sub infinity, and showing that the parameter psi = K R sub b (p sub infinity) depends only on u sub infinity and the mixture ratio has been found. The detailed behavior of psi has been determined and values of p sub infinity, u sub infinity, psi, and mixture ratio at the explosion limit have been computed. The location of the explosion limit curves suggests experiments in which the effects of quenching should be quite drastic as the explosion boundary is crossed. Rarefied flow effects due to shock and boundary layer thickening are shown to be unimportant. (Author)
