Abstract : New findings concerning previously unobserved laser action in the spectrum of ionized nitrogen are reported. In addition, new, more accurate observations confirming previous findings of laser action in ionized argon, nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon are reported. A new laser line in N 2 at 3994.99 A was obtained. Wavelength measurements, accurate to within plus or minus 0.02 to plus or minus 0.04 A, were made on several other nitrogen lines, previously less accurately measured, allowing positive confirmation of these lines as nitrogen lines. The output of a dc pulsed ion gas laser was studied spectrographically. Spectrographic techniques are developed which enable one to identify the source of a laser line by means of very accurate wavelength measurements. A computer program for obtaining tables of possible emission wavelengths for neutral and ionized atoms from tables of relative atomic energy levels is described. The observed laser lines are discussed as to the source ion, the transition responsible for the emission, the repeatability of the line, and the intensity. The conclusion, backed by the experimental evidence, is that laser lines can be classified as to origin by means of very accurate wavelength measurements. These measurements are essential for further research in the understanding of excitation processes in ion gas lasers. (Author)
