Abstract : The objective was an improvement in the state-of-the-art in recording display data on a thin, flexible plastic film by utilizing the radiant energy of a laser beam. Candidate recording materials must exhibit altered transmission upon the absorption of laser energy. Materials were tested by exposure to the focussed energy of Xenon lamps and were irradiated by ruby and CO2 lasers. Tests of recording materials identified thin metallic films and selected organic substances as suitable. Additional effort to optimize formulation and application procedures of the organic materials is recommended. Plastic substrate materials suitable for data recording by laser were found to be presently available in the polyimide and polyester families. (Author)
