Abstract : The results of a study to determine the atmospheric limitations upon the propagation of millimeter wavelength signals are presented. The analysis concerned both theoretical and experimental studies. The effects of the homogeneous and inhomogeneous atmosphere are discussed in terms of absorption and dispersion. In addition, the limitations imposed by these effects upon three idealized systems representative of a pulse compression radar, pulse amplitude-modulated and frequency-shift keyed data links were analyzed. Numerical values of the maximum usable bandwidth and minimum transmitted pulse length for frequencies in the absorption windows were calculated for representative atmospheric models and transmission paths.
