Abstract : A boundary-value problem giving rise to a one-dimensional acceleration wave in a nonlinear viscoelastic material is shown to have a solution, valid in a region behind the wave front, such that stress, strain and velocity are expressed as power series in time measured from the arrival of the wave; the coefficients are functions of position and obtainable by quadrature from first-order differential equations. The results may be used to determine short-time viscoelastic behavior by means of wave-propagation experiments.
