Abstract : A boundaryvalue problem giving rise to a onedimensional acceleration wave in a nonlinear viscoelastic material is shown to have a solution, valid in a region behind the wave front, such that stress, strain and velocity are expressed as power series in time measured from the arrival of the wave; the coefficients are functions of position and obtainable by quadrature from firstorder differential equations. The results may be used to determine shorttime viscoelastic behavior by means of wavepropagation experiments.
