Abstract : Recent observations on the effects of adsorbed water, complex ions and organic molecules on the microhardness and behavior of near-surface dislocations in such non-metals as Ge, MgO and AgCl are described. It is shown that hardness and dislocation mobility can either be increased or decreased depending on the nature of the solid-environment system. Possible mechanisms are discussed. (Author)
