Abstract : The exact solution is obtained for the spherical wave generated by the quasi-static expansion of a 'gamma law' gas that fills a spherical cavity contained in an elastic medium. The results from several parametric studies involving the particle velocity, the stresses, the 'hydrodynamic' pressure, and the stress deviators are presented. Results from a typical Lagrangian finite difference technique are compared with the exact theory in order to estimate errors that may exist when these techniques are used to calculate numerical solutions for problems that have no exact solution.
