Abstract : A study has been made to determine the effect of addition of one percent of diphenylamine, carbazole, para-nitraniline, or dicyandiamide, on the stability, sensitivity, and brisance characteristics of Pentolite, Ednatol, Tetrytol, and Cyclonite-TNT compositions. These stabilizers were selected because of their known favorable action on various explosives. It has been found that the addition of one percent of any of these stabilizers to the high explosives does not affect the sensitivity to initiation or brisance characteristics of any of the explosives to a significant extent. Carbazole, in general, showed the greatest effect towards increasing the stability of these high explosives as indicated by the results of the Vacuum Stability Test. Surveillance tests at 65 C are being made to determine the extent of the improvement in stability affected by carbazole and the second best stabilizer studied. (Author)
