Abstract : The effects of kinetic reaction on the ship due to acceleration of the ballast by the pump in the Minorsky activated tank system of ship stabilization is discussed. It is shown that only the instantaneous weight and position of the fluid particles relative to the ships center of rotation need be taken into account in determining the net stabilizing moment. Further, it is shown that due to the dynamic effects of fluid motion the ship will in general be subjected to vertical and horizontal translation. It is concluded that it is possible to reduce or eliminate the destabilizing effects of kinetic reaction as a net stabilizing force. The location of the pump in the tank system is shown to have no effect on the stabilization process. (Author)
