Abstract : This test was conducted to determine the fragmentation characteristics of Composition C-3 loaded rod expelling warheads Naval Ordnance Laboratory Model 112, which were constructed from 1/2 in. boiler plate, hot grooved formed into half cylinders, and welded into cylinders 4.5 in. diameter, 12 in. long, with a major wall thickness of 7/16 in. Although the warheads broke along the grooves, as was intended, the rods thus produced broke transversely. The fragments of rods varied from 1/2 in. to 6 in. in length, and had an average median velocity of 4830 f/s. (Author)
