Abstract : This test was conducted to determine the fragmentation characteristics of experimental 13-1/2 in. diameter Rod-expelling Warheads Type 'G'. The Type 'G' Warheads having 2 in., 5-3/4 in. and 8-3/4 in. central conduits had the following fragmentation characteristics: (1) Two bands of rod-like fragments were produced about their circumference. The bands were approximately 4-1/2 deg apart. (2) The rod-like fragments averaged 5 in to 8 in in length with some individual rods as long as 9-1/2 in. were obtained from each warhead. (3) The average fragment velocities produced were 5000, 6100, and 7050 feet per second on warheads having 8-3/4 in. 5-3/4 in, and 2 in. diameter conduits respectively. (4) Fragment penetrations, up to 1-3/4 in. were obtained on 1-1/2 in thick 24 S-T Aluminum plates which were edge-on to the warheads. (Author)
