Abstract : New species such as ClF5O, ClF3O2, and BrF7 were sought via glow discharge and high-temperature/high-pressure fluorinations. These syntheses were unsuccessful with covalent, anionic, or cationic precursors. High-pressure fluorination techniques also failed to give OF3(+), ArF(+), ClF6, and BrF6(+) salts. New syntheses of SOF4, ClSO2F, and ClOSO2F were developed using ClF as a reactant. Structural investigations of a number of anionic and cationic bromine fluoride complexes were initiated. Data relevant to the synthesis and characterization of ClF3O have been summarized. (Author)
