Abstract : Two major categories of transceivers were examined for suitability as the basic radio element in the Concept Village Alarm System (VAS) proposed in various reports on the ARPA/MRDC Village Alarm project. The transceivers examined were the OPS/FM-1A (FM-1) and the OPS/FM-5A (FM-5). Both of these transceivers were widely deployed throughout Thailand at the time of preparation of this report, primarily as components of the widespread Village and Police Radio Systems. They were also in limited tactical use, with the Communist Suppression Operations Command. A comparison was made with representative Citizen's Band (CB) transceivers, some of which are also in use in Thailand. Although on a cost basis, the CB transceivers are a tempting alternative to the more costly FM-1 and FM-5 radios, the durability and reliability of the former have yet to be established by systematic testing. A logistic system currently exists for the support of the FM-1 and FM-5. A new system would have to be introduced to support a radio of differing technical characteristics. The durability and performance of the FM-1 and FM-5 are a matter of record - although their logistic support, particularly in the matter of power supply is weak. If a VAS is to be introduced in Thailand, it should be based upon the FM-1 and FM-5 radios as the basic transceiver element.
