Abstract : This report presents the results of the Category II Systems Evaluation of the F-4E aircraft which was conducted at the Air Force Flight Test Center. Six hundred sixty five missions were flown from 11 November 1967 through 30 June 1969. The missions flown were for transition, air-to-ground and air-to-air gun firing, engine, radar, tacan patterns, refueling, conventional and nuclear weapons, and Dart tow target system verification. No major pilot training problems were encountered during the transition flights. A/G gun tests were flown which subjected the M61A1 gun system to high and low rate firings. Under level flight conditions, engine flameouts could be expected above 35,000 feet PA, at airspeeds below 230 KIAS and angles of attack of 9 to 16 units. Under maneuvering conditions, engine flameouts could be expected above 30,000 feet PA at airspeeds below 400 KIAS and angles of attack of 12 to 18 units. In all cases, engine flameout occurred immediately after the start of gunfire. Forty-three flights were conducted in direct support of General Electric's requirement to eliminate the compressor stall/flameout problem during throttle transients associated with the J79-GE-10/17 engine. The performance of the tacan was satisfactory and met system specifications. Refueling tests were conducted to evaluate the compatibility of the F-4E with the KC-135 tanker. The DIVE TOSS mode of the WRCS was tested and produced satisfactory results.
