Abstract : The CARMONETTE III (RAC R-28) computer simulation of small unit combat is expanded to include the performance of night vision devices. Six classes of surveillance-target acquisition devices with six members of each class can be simulated. Emphasis is on image intensifier devices, unaided eye (including binoculars), radar and thermal devices are included. A simulated battle is presented in which three levels of availability of night vision devices and two levels of ambient light are played in different replications. The results of the battles, as measured by casualties on each side, can be related (with statistically significant differences) to the availability of night vision equipment and to the level of available light.
