Abstract : The significance of this research and development program to the Air Force is that a gyro is being developed that does not depend on its accuracy being achieved through ultra-precision fabrication of parts and extensive test and calibration. Hence, the result will be a gyro with stable and repeatable performance under adverse environments, in addition to lower cost and higher reliability. The prime objectives of this follow-on program were the continued development of the Multiple Rotation Gyroscope (MRG) concept and the experimental demonstration of the performance capability of a given configuration. Evaluations of several iterations of an engineering model MRG at both gyro and platform levels led to the identification and reduction of certain error mechanisms, and in the final configuration yielded excellent test data. Based on these encouraging test results, preliminary design information was prepared for an extremely simple embodiment of the MRG principle. (Author)
