Abstract : Three modes of magnetically induced ionization were observed in Xenon, depending on whether the initial conductivity was electron-atom or electron-ion collision dominated. A study on the effect of impurities on the ionization rate in Xenon shock waves was undertaken. It was observed that diatomic impurities as low as 100 ppm can significantly increase the ionization rate and that the ionization is due to the electronic excitation of low-lying molecular states.
