Abstract : The solution to the initial value problem for the linearized Navier-Stokes equations is described. For times large compared with the time between molecular collisions in the gas and explicit form of the asymptotic solution is given. As a consequence it is shown that inviscid theory only appears as a nonuniform limit; that for very long times dissipation dominates the solution. For times large compared with the time necessary for a sound wave to traverse the extent of the initial disturbance an extremely simple asymptotic solution is obtained. This depends on only the gross properties of the initial disturbance. An argument is given which shows that only the leading term in the Navier-Strokes asymptotic expansion is accurate. (Author)
