Abstract : This report presents a 2 1/2 year climatology of penetrations of the tropopause at 9 stations in the United States. WSR-57 radar data for 1961-1963 are summarized by geographical area, by months, and on a diurnal basis. The main summary is for penetrations greater than 5,000 and 10,000 feet. Conclusions are that penetrations of the tropopause occur (1) near the time of maximum thunderstorm activity, (2) mostly in the summer, (3) in the areas of greatest severe thunderstorm activity; (4) there was no simple relationship found between ttropopause penetrations and the number of thunderstorms; and (5) there was no useful relationship found between tropoxces;eixigyt5v the extent of the tropopause penetrations.
