Abstract : A target surface consisting of a metal base with a layer of either xenon or carbon dioxide frozen onto it was examined for its efficiency as a secondary electron emitter. The surface did not give spontaneous emission as in the Malter effect. The surface did, however, appear to acquire a strong positive surface charge, indicating that secondary electron emission exceeded the incident primary electron current. Further experiments with different surfaces are planned. (Author)
