Abstract : Exposure of poly-L-glutamic acid in 1% solution to 20 and 40 Mrad of gamma radiation caused degradation of the polymer into small polypeptides. The peptides were terminated at the point of scission by amide and alpha-ketoglutaric acid residues. The degraded polymer became less susceptible to the action of the proteolytic enzymes of a crude pancreatin preparation. Evidence for optical inversion of some L-glutamic acid residues was obtained. The effects observed were due to an indirect action of the radiation. (Author)
