Abstract : This report presents the results of an experimental study that was directed towards verifying the theory of polarization for a porous diffusion electrode system. In addition, all of the theory and recent literature which is relevant to the problem is presented in considerable detail. The two most significant findings of the study, which utilized the SnCl2, SnCl4 redox couple at solid and porous electrodes of carbon, are: 1) As predicted by the theory, there is a doubling of the normal Tafel slope for the porous electrode systems. 2) The calculated and experimental Tafel intercepts for the porous electrode systems are in good agreement. The conclusion of this study is that it has been shown in a clear and unambiguous manner that the proposed theory for the porous diffusion electrode system is correct. This has significance from a fundamental point of view since it confirms, for the first time, the proposed physical picture of this type of system. It also has practical implications in the field of fuel cells and related energy conversion devices where such systems are often used but not well understood. In particular, it justifies the extension of the concepts used to the more complex gas diffusion type of electrode system. (Author)
