Abstract : A general theory of multipolar continuum mechanics has been developed by Green and Rivlin (1964b) based on multipolar displacements. A new definition of multipolar displacements is given here and the place of directors in this theory is identified. The dynamical theory of displacements, directors and dipolar displacements corresponding to the present definitions is outlined and this contains Ericksen's (1961) theory of liquid crystals as a special case. Explicit constitutive equations are obtained for an elastic continuum under the action of ordinary displacements and directors. (Author)
