Abstract : In the numerical calculations a single set of parameters for the frame and the shell are chosen along with bay lengths varying from a length-diameter ratio of 0.10 to 0.50. Within this range the stresses in the frame are found to be independent of the distance between the rings. A second investigation involves a single set of frame and shell parameters, but the location of the discontinuity varies. The results indicate that changing the location of the discontinuity within the range considered produces negligible effects on the maximum bending stress in the frame. A third investigation considers various approximate solutions of different degrees of simplicity and accuracy. The results of these solutions are plotted and compared with the results of the exact solution. Finally, a smoothly varying transition section between the two uniform segments of the ring was considered in the analysis.
