Abstract : The terminology 'micromorphic materials' is used to denote materials whose continuum behavior is dependent on the microstructure of the material. The basic ideas and some recent results of a properly invariant continuum theory applicable to such materials are presented. The theory gives rise to some new concepts pertaining to stress moments, inertial spin and microgyrations whereby the laws of motion require adjoining certain additional principles to the basic axioms of mechanics. The basic principles are systematically introduced and discussed. Field equations, jump conditions and constitutive equations for simple microfluids are presented in some detail as an example of the general theory. It is shown how some of thep previously developed theories of anisotropic fluids turn out to be special cases of the present theory. A theory of linear microviscoelasticity is given. (Author)
