Abstract : The purpose of the paper is to present a few observations about the functions of political mass meetings which emerged as a by-product from a larger study of the Berlin blockade and airlift of 1948-49. The data on which these observations are based are of a qualitative nature: interviews made by the author with some 20 political leaders in Berlin, reports on public opinion during the blockade prepared by ten public opinion interviewers, essays on their experiences during the blockade submitted to a Berlin newspaper by 340 Berliners, and published materials from the period.
