Abstract : The radar cross section of a dielectric sphere whose relative dielectric constant is significantly greater than unity is computed by means of the modified geometrical optics method. A new technique is introduced for treating the on-axis, internally reflected ray for the regions where the geometrical optics approach fails. Numerical calculations are made for the sphere whose specific dielectric constant is equal to 2.592 (i.e., refractive index is equal to 1.61). The results compare favorably with those obtained from the boundary value solution. The contributions of the stationary rays are relatively large and the rapid oscillations in the region of larger radius are attributed to the multiple bounce stationary ray. (Author)
