Abstract : The interaction of a plane presssessure pulse with a smooth cylindrical cavity in a two dimensional, elastic, homogenous medium is studied using the 'high frequency' approximation common to geometrical optics. Both a normal and oblique impingement are considered. Reflection and diver gence coefficients are computed and plotted as a function of problem geometry. Stresses and displacements along the cylindrical surface are also shown. The maximum stress occurs on the surface near the 70 degree central angle radial when the incidence is normal. Computations of similar dividivergence and reflection coefficients for oblique impingement are accomplished by geometrical considerations using the computed values for normal impingement. The maximum stress is considerably less than for the normal case. (Author)
