Abstract : The emancipation of the serfs in 1861 and the upheaval in industry and agriculture of 1928-1932 are undoubtedly the crucial milestones on the road to the formation of the Russian working class as we know it now. Emerging from serfs and peasantry, this class acquired the features of a modern urban proletariat in the continuous process of industrialization of the country.
