Abstract : The primary aim of the research program was to obtain an objective appreciation of the time pattern of attention, habituation and other forms of learning in man. The second aim was to study the mechanism of this sensory control. Two possibilities, which do not exclude each other, were suggested: (1) a direct inhibitory action upon the specific pathways from the receptor up to the cerebral cortex, and (2) an indirect centrifugal action through the muscular mechanism regulating the energy of the stimulus. It was proposed to determine the role of the pupillary and ocular muscles in visual evoked response changes.
