Abstract : This document contains a definition of servomechanism, or servo system, a statement of the function of a missile control system, a discussion of the stability problem and its relation to complex frequency, a derivation of the feedback equation with emphasis on the use of complex functions to describe signal delays as well as amplifications, a brief discussion of the Nyquist criterion and the root-locus method for investigating stability, and, finally, a brief introduction to the Laplace transform and its applications to servo theory. The treatment of servomechanism theory is based in part on electromechanical analogies as discussed briefly in 'Introduction to vacuum tubes,' by C.T. Morrow and members of the Technical Training and Scientific Relations group. Such analogies permit treatment of the system as if it were entirely electrical or entirely mechanical in character.
