Abstract : The report describes work undertaken to resolve uncertainties in the forced-convection vaporization characteristics of potassium that affect the SNAP-50/SPUR boiler design. A review is presented of liquid-metal and forcedconvection vaporization heat transfer. The test program and single-tube boiler developed to measure liquid and high-vapor-quality potassium heat transfer coefficients are described. Finally, the data processing procedure and results of the test program are described and discussed. The major conclusions were that, with a twisted-tape insert in the tube, the quality beyond which the heat transfer coefficient decreases very rapidly, due to the formation of dry spots, is 80 to 90 percent, and the heat transfer coefficient beyond this quality remains an order of magnitude greater than the corresponding dry-vapor coefficient.
