Abstract : Two distinct programs were carried out on CHAIN Cruise 34, conducted between southern New England and Puerto Rico. One was a study of the temperature structure of the upper 500 feet of the water column (with thermistor chain and contouring temperature recorder). The other, an intensive geophysical study of the Nares Basin, the Puerto Rico Trench and Outer Ridge, and a small portion of the Bermuda Rise, comprised continuous observations of gravity and total-intensity magnetic fields, seismic profiling, and bathymetry, as well as point observations of bottom reflectivity, seismic velocity, and the correlation of horizontal temperature changes with GEKmeasured currents. The journals of the chief scientists form the basis of this report. A tabulation of the sort of observations made and their locations is included together with track charts. (Author)
