Abstract : Layer-like field inhomogeneities can form in CdS at high field strengths. By simultaneously illuminating CdS crystals with visible light near the absorption edge and with infrared or ultraviolet radiation it is possible to visually observe the effects of infrared and ultraviolet excitation on the layer-like field inhomogeneities. Photographs are presented which show that the layer-like field inhomogeneities can be either created or destroyed by infrared and ultraviolet illumination, depending upon the intensity and distribution of the radiation. In order to describe the effects of infrared and ultraviolet excitation on field inhomogeneities a discussion is given of some of the previously published reports, including a reaction-kinetic model, concerning the electrical and optical properties of CdS. The experimental results are shown to agree with those predicted by the reaction-kinetic model. (Author)
