Abstract : A device was developed for using photoelasticity to indicate such rapidly moving stress patterns as those produced by impact on a transparent plate. The optical technique makes use of light to encounter a circular polarizer, a model placed against a 1-meterradius concave mirror, a circular analyzer, and an objective forming the image of the model on film that is carried on a uniformly revolving drum. The light source is a spark gap between zinc spheres, the sparks having a frequency of about 4000 per second. They are furnished by charge and discharge of a 0.16-microfared capacitor, connected by a reversing switch to a 8-microfarad capacitor charged to 8000 switch.
