Abstract : The effect and cause of impurities are of great concern to high ultra-high vacuum researchers. As most vacuum gauges measure only total pressure, a partial pressure analyzer must be used to detect and analyze residual gases. Four types of analyzers are discussed in relation to their operation, useful total and partial pressure ranges, mass range, advantages, etc. Some effects and causes of impurities are given. Spectra showing some of the various impurities found in vacua are discussed. (Author)
