Abstract : The elastic response of a submerged structure to an underwater explosion is analyzed mathematically as a problem in hydroelasticity. First the effective pressure field from the explosion is described in terms of the time variation of the volume of the explosion bubble, and the complex motions of the structure are expressed in terms of the normal modes of free vibration of the structure in water. A differential equation is then derived for the motion; where the generalized force is shown, by a reciprocity principle, to depend separately on the history of the explosion bubble without the target, and the pressure field due to the motion of the target without the explosion. Finally some representative solutions of the differential equation are discussed to show in particular how the amplitude of vibration depends on possible synchronization between the pulsation period of the explosion bubble and the vibration period of the structure.
