Abstract : The self-diffusion coefficients of iron and calcium in silicate melts were measured. These data and comparable data in the published literature do not fully support some of the currently held theories of the structure of silicate melts. The diffusivity of iron, for example, seems to have a surprisingly high energy of activation, and further information is needed concerning the diffusivity. The exchange of iron between solid metal and molten iron silicate was also studied. This phenomenon creates difficulties in determining the diffusivity of iron when it is necessary, as in this study, to use the metal iron as the material of construction for diffusion vessels.
